About East Timor

The Democratic Republic of East Timor or Timor-Leste is a nation in South East Asia, 15,007 square kilometres in size, and consisting of the Eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro, Jaco and Oecussi-Ambeno located on the western side of the island and surrounded by West Timor. It is located 450 hundred kilometres northwest of Australia. The country has 13 district areas. Formerly colonised by Portugal and then occupied by Indonesia, East Timor achieved independence on May 20 2002.
