A brand new library for Atauro Island
Positioned between the primary school and the offices of Roman Luan (the
community owned NGO which administers the library service), the new library
is bigger and better than ever. A community owned project if ever
there was one, the new library was built from the ground up and
features a mural painted by the local upper primary and junior high
school students.

The new library opened in February 2006 to coincide with the birthday of Roman
Luan, and contains a larger collection of materials. The new branch
provides an opportunity to extend on the excellent services already provided
by the staff including literacy projects, collections in several languages,
and outreach services to remote communities by pack horse and boat. For
background information about this library see the entry for Biblioteca
Haburas Moris, NGO Roman Luan, Atauro Island in the public libraries
section of this website.

Funds from the second Library Books for East Timor Trivia Night held in
Melbourne on the 29 April 2005 (see events sections) were utilised to
improve the collections particularly for adults. Atauro Island teachers,
nurses, religious leaders and health workers have all participated in the
selection of materials for the new community library.
